Reaching important conclusions about players and teams through statistical baseball analysis requires some understanding of the game. Whether an amateur or professional analyst, a grounding in basic pitching and batting data is a must.

With regard to hitters, batting statistics are key in teasing out the general acumen of players at the plate. Hitting for power is affirmed by large numbers of home runs. The ability to hit in general is determined by batting average. Players with high batting averages may or may not hit for power as well. Hitting statistics are important in a player’s earning power. Better hitters will obviously earn more money.

While batters secure their paychecks by hitting, pitchers obviously secure theirs by preventing hits and runs. Probably the three most important categories in figuring a pitcher’s worth are runs permitted per nine innings (earned run average), as well as games won and batters struck out. His spot in the pitching rotation, and his value to the team, can be pretty closely found out by analyzing these numbers.

Most amateur fans will be familiar with basic statistical categories. Beyond this is a whole other layer to the game. This is the arena of professionals, who spend their careers breaking down numbers and forming comparisons and contrasts between various players.

Most in-depth analysis revolves around computerized graphs, charts, and other intricate computations. In this manner, complex comparisons can be made immediately after a game ends and revealed to fans in real time.

Any comparison between teams and players, including some that are quite obscure, can be teased out and examined through statistical baseball analysis. Different eras of the game can be compared and contrasted, and the true stars can be determined.

All Stats and Records are through games of Sunday, June 12th

Week in Review
The frustration continued last week for The Baseball Handicapper and our subscribers. We released 5 picks last week and went 1-4 losing 6.34 units. We are now -40.11 on the season. We have had only 1 winning week thus far in 2011.

Without exception, this is my worst start for a season in my history of wagering on Baseball. While 45 games is a very small sample, that offers little consolation to our psyche and to our bankroll.

Last year I released 195 picks, and so 45 picks represents less than 25% of the year.   I will continue to work hard, and maintain the solid disciplined approach to baseball analysis that has worked for so many consecutive years.

Wishing you a great week!

Hitting statistics are important in a player's earning power. Better hitters will obviously earn more money.

On the other side, pitchers also have marks by which they are measured, both for general performance ability and for future contract negotiations. Pitchers are most vital for the games they win, the amount of runs they give up per inning (known as earned run average), and the number of strikeouts they post. These particular statistics, along with many others, can be analyzed to figure the general worth of a pitcher, and his spot in a team's rotation.

Beyond the very basic statistics most known to lovers of the game is another whole level. On this level, every aspect of every pitch is broken down into complex analysis. This is the level of professional baseball statisticians, who crunch numbers for a living in order to prepare for any comparison between players and teams that might be needed or wanted.

Broader professional analysis makes use of sophisticated technology. Statistical charts and graphs can often clarify data, and these visual representations can then be presented during games to more casual baseball fans.

Baseball analysis, then, concerns a wide array of statistics and data that can be used for both basic and complex comparisons of players, teams, and games from all eras of the game. It also allows for a determination of the general financial worth of a particular player, and that player's place in baseball history.

All Stats and Records are through games of Sunday, May 29th
Week in Review
The Baseball Handicapper struggled again last week going 2-5 for a loss of 7.28 Units. We are now 10-21, -26.53 units on the year. 7 Best Bets were released on the week, below our anticipated 10-15 range.
Our slump is now over a Month old and reminds us of last year’s midseason draw down where over a nine week period we lost 35.31 units. Even with that losing streak we were profitable in 2010.
Weekly/Monthly Trends
This was a big week for Favorites. You may have noticed Sunday that the Favorites won 14 of the 16 games. For the week the “chalk” was 59-33 (64.13%) and is now 423-351 (54.65%) on the season. As of 5/1 (covered in newsletter 2.4) Favorites and Dogs were tied at 209-209. So for the last 4 weeks Favorites have enjoyed a 214-142 run (60.1%). Road favorites last week were 18-7 (72.0%) and are now 120-107 (52.9%) in 2011.
Since we referenced data as of 5/1 I thought we would also look at the Over/Unders over that period.   We have talked about the lack of scoring and how the Odds Maker has adjusted to this trend. For the last 4 weeks (since 5/1) the Over/Under record was 176/174. Hard to get more even than that!
Unsustainable Trends
The Cleveland Indians (19-6 76%) and Milwaukee Brewers (21-7 75%) have racked up impressive records at Home this season. If they were continue to play at this pace these teams would each end the season with 61 Home victories. You would have to go back to the 1998 New York Yankees to find a team with that many Home victories. The ’98 Yanks went 114-48 for the season (70+%) and had an astounding 62-19 (76+%) record at Home. The 2001 Seattle Mariners, who were 116-46 (71+%) were 57-24 at Home.
How do we take advantage of this? A couple of baseball betting strategies may prove profitable. When these teams play on the Road they will be overvalued. As both teams have losing records away from Home (Clev 12-13) and Milwaukee (8-17) it would be prudent to look for spots to play against these teams when they are traveling. One could also wait for their Home momentum to flatten out, at which point you will find great value playing against these teams even at Home.
Wishing you a great week!
