All Stats and Records are through games of Sunday, August 7th
The Baseball Handicapper resumed our recent rally with an outstanding 7-1 performance to win 11.90 units. Our selected teams outscored our opponents 57-28 for the week with the only loser being an extra inning 4-3 loss on Friday Night. Since the All Star Break we are 21-9 plus 24.28 units and have now recovered 28.88 units from our season low on 6/16/2011.
For the season we are now minus 18.97 units. We will look to build on our current momentum as we make every effort to continue our rally this 2nd half of the 2011 season.
Update on Scoring
Is it just me or does there seem to be an uptick in scoring? This weekend we saw San Diego score 35 runs in their weekend series at Pittsburgh. The New York Yankees recently scored 63 runs over a 7 game stretch including outbursts of 17 and 18 runs and they have scored 10 runs or more 4 times since July 25th. This past Saturday, August 6th, 5 teams scored 10 runs or more. As there has been much written about the lack of scoring this past 2 years I thought it was time to take another look.
While scoring may have perked up recently, average runs per game for the season continues to drop. In the National League teams are scoring an average of 4.15 runs per game which represents a 5th straight yearly decline and a 19 year low. You have to go back to 1992 to find a lower number, when scoring per team was 3.88 runs per game in the National League.
In the American League the numbers are higher (as one would expect) but the trend is the same. This season teams are scoring at a 4.35 runs per game pace which also represents the 5th consecutive lower number. Here too you would need to go back to 1992 to find a lower number, in this case 4.32.
In looking at the over/under results for 2011, 818 games have gone over the total while 800 have gone under. In the last 30 days 183 games have gone over as compared to 173 that have gone under. At one point these number were equal so there has been an increase in games going over the total. In my newsletter 2.5 (May 10th, 2011) I noted that NL teams were scoring at a 4.13 RPG pace and the AL was averaging .4.24 RPG. So scoring has been rising but not by a large enough amount to change the season scoring trend.
Wishing you a great week!
